Indonesian Navy To Refurbish Nine Old Warships

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Dec 6, 2022 - : 6:35 pm

The Indonesian Navy (TNI-AL) will refurbish and modernize nine of its old warships, said TNI-AL Chief of Staff, Admiral Yudo Margono. The refurbishment program which will be taken by the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (Kementerian Pertahanan RI / Kemhan RI) will prioritize ships that are more than 30 years old.

“[These] old ships will be refurbished, which means they will be repowered by replacing their engines, [fixing] their hulls, and replacing their SEWACO (Sensor, Weapon, and Command),” he said in Jakarta on Monday (Dec. 5). “Like a mid-life modernization project, so that they will return to their original functions, this is of course to strengthen those,” he added.

He further elaborated that Parchim-class corvettes, Frosch-class landing ships, and a number of Fast Patrol Boats (FPBs) of the Indonesian Navy will be the ones to undergo the refurbishment program.

“We will prioritize those which are old and [in poor] technical condition. So, we will choose the lowest technical condition first. Particularly the Parchim-class, Frosch, then there are FPBs which are over 30 years old,” he said.

Other than the mentioned class of warships, one particular vessel was also mentioned: the KRI Teluk Amboina (503) Landing Ship, Tank (LST). Built and launched in 1961 by Japan’s Sasebo Heavy Industries as a copy of the U.S. World War II-era LST 542-class, the ship is the oldest, currently active vessel in the Indonesian Navy.
