Indonesia’s BPPT, Turkiye’s SAGE To Jointly Develop Modular ASM

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Jul 23, 2022 - : 4:42 pm

Indonesia’s BPPT and Turkiye’s SAGE have agreed to jointly develop a modular air-to-surface missile (ASM) to arm the future Indonesian-made Elang Hitam Medium Altitude, Long Endurance Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (MALE UAV).

The agreement was revealed in a webinar on Thursday last week (14 July) involving engineers and experts from Indonesia’s Agency for the Assessment and Application of Technology (Badan Pengkajian dan Penerapan Teknologi, BPPT), and Turkiye’s Defense Industries Research and Development Institute (Savunma Sanayii Araştırma ve Geliştirme Enstitüsü, SAGE), a division under the Scientific and Technological Research Institution of Turkiye (Türkiye Bilimsel ve Teknolojik Araştırma Kurumu, TÜBİTAK).

BPPT and SAGE confirmed that both organizations have started working on a modular ASM to suit different mission requirements. According to the presentation material, the missile can be configured for anti-ship to land attack missions by fitting different sensor/seeker and warhead combinations which can be done quickly in the field.

The webinar presentation also mentioned that the collaboration between BPPT and SAGE will take form where the missile will be built in Turkiye while its assembly and testing phase will be done in Indonesia. Furthermore, aside from the potential that some of the missile parts can be built domestically n Indonesia, It was also noted that due to its modularity, there’s also a prospect to use the missile with manned combat aircraft of the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU).

Indonesia’s Elang Hitam MALE UAV project itself has recently met with another setback. While it was reported earlier this year that the project will conduct its first flight in the first half of 2022, a reorganization in its consortium structure has caused a lack of funding for the project which, in turn, has further delayed the project.
