Malaysian Army to Acquire Hundreds of M72 LAW-EC Units

Our Bureau - : Jul 16, 2024 - : 12:14 am

The Malaysian Army has recently announced a tender inviting local companies to supply and deliver 800 M72 Light Anti-tank Weapon Enhanced Capability (LAW-EC) units for the 10th Parachute Brigade.

Manufactured by the Norwegian-Finnish aerospace and defence group Nammo, this procurement is expected to replace the Russian-made RPG-7 currently in the brigade’s inventory. The RPG-7, which requires a two-man team to operate and is less compact, is being phased out in favour of the more portable M72 LAW-EC.

The existing RPG-7 launchers and their ammunition is likely to be transferred to other units in the service.

The M72 first entered combat during the Vietnam War in the early 1960s where it was extensively utilised by U.S. and allied forces. Its lightweight and portable design enabled infantry soldiers to effectively engage enemy armour and fortified positions.

Since its initial deployment, the weapon has undergone continuous upgrades. The current M72 LAW-EC variant boasts a maximum penetration capability of 450 mm of Rolled Homogeneous Armour (RHA). It has a maximum effective range of approximately 200 metres, with a complete ready-to-fire unit weighing around 2.5 kg.

The tender for the M72 LAW-EC procurement by the Malaysian Army will remain open until the end of July 2024.
