An enhanced list of missions performed by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) Heron TP (Eitan), resulted in adding special payloads to this strategic UAV.

These UAV are deployed in many missions including persistence surveillance of what is defined as areas of interest like Syria, where the Iranians are upgrading rockets to be used by the Hezbollah in Lebanon and the Sinai desert, where Islamist terror groups are operating.

“Most of our missions are performed in the northern theatre”, Lt. Col. S’, Commander of the 210th Squadron told the IAF website. “Some of the force’s manned squadrons have capabilities similar to ours, but unlike them, we are able to fly in life-threatening areas. We may not be able to look out the window and see what’s going on, but we’re able to make up for the discrepancy,” he added.

Last year, the IAF has deployed more Heron -TP MALE UAV, some are advanced versions.

The new versions have a greater max takeoff weight, to allow the use of advanced sensors and more fuel to increase endurance.

The number of this MALE UAV has been increased by 50per cent recently and their number will continue to grow. Flight hours of this strategic UAV have been increased by more than 25per cent since the beginning of 2018.

The Max takeoff weight of the Israel aerospace industries (IAI) Heron -TP has been increased and is now 5.4 tons (11.904 pounds). The addition of 400 KGS (881 pounds) enables according to IAF source the performance of “complicated missions”

The new version also includes an Israeli developed navigation system and a differential braking system.

The Heron-TP has an automatic takeoff and landing system, which allows operations in bad weather conditions.

The increase in the number of Heron – TP UAV is part of the IAF’s master plan meant to build the force’s UAV arsenal in the coming 15 years.
