Qatar Airways Group Chief Executive Akbar Al Baker to Step Down

Our Bureau - : Oct 25, 2023 - : 9:36 am

Qatar Airways Group chief executive Akbar Al Baker is stepping down, after 27 years leading the company, on Nov. 5.

Al Baker will be succeeded by Badr Mohammed Al-Meer, who currently serves as the chief operating officer of Hamad International Airport in Doha.

Under Al Baker’s leadership, Qatar Airways grew to become one of the most recognisable and trusted brands globally, synonymous with customer service quality and the highest of standards, the carrier said. The national carrier achieved an unprecedented seven-times win of the “World’s Best Airline” award, and the Hamad International Airport, which is under its management and operation, was recognised as the “World’s Best Airport.”

Al Baker was appointed CEO in 1997, three years after the airline’s launch, and has been instrumental in transforming Qatar Airways into a major international carrier that competes against the likes of Dubai’s Emirates and Turkish Airlines.
