US Approves Israeli KC-46A Buy

: Mar 4, 2020 - : 6:38 am

The Foreign Military Sale (FMS) of up to eight KC-46 aircraft and related equipment for an estimated cost of $2.4 billion has received U.S. State Department approval.

The new generation mid-air refueller will be used by the Israeli Air Force and also provide a redundant capability to U.S. assets within the region, potentially freeing U.S. assets for use elsewhere during times of war.

Aerial refuelling and strategic airlift have been consistently cited as significant shortfalls for U.S allies in recent conflicts.

Israel will also acquire up to 17 PW4062 turbofan engines (16 installed, 1 spare); up to 18 Raytheon MAGR 2K-GPS SAASM receivers (16 installed, 2 spares), in addition to AN/ARC-210 U/VHF radios, APX-119 Identification Friend or Foe transponders, initial spares and repair parts, consumables, etc.

The U.S. Air Force has taken delivery of at least 23 KC-46A ‘Pegasus’ aircraft till date and is expected to order at least 179 aircraft in total.

The KC-46, derived from Boeing’s commercial 767 airframe, is built in Boeing’s Everett, Wash., facility
