Kongsberg Maritime has signed a US$23 million (200M Norway Krone) contract with Spanish shipbuilder Navantia to supply propeller systems for five F110 frigates, currently in construction for the Spanish Navy.
The next-generation vessels are designed to follow on from Navantia’s successful F100 frigate, bringing together state-of-the-art technologies to create a ship for the 21st century.
“We are very pleased to be working with Navantia on this project,” said Egil Haugsdal, President, Kongsberg Maritime. “They are a top-rated company and experts in the naval shipbuilding arena. This order again confirms the shipbuilding industry’s recognition of Kongsberg as the world leader of naval propulsion equipment.”
The Controllable Pitch Propeller (CPP) offers a significant increase in efficiency with less exposure to cavitation by the blade foot. This helps the CPP to avoid peak pressures and cavitation.
The F110-class multi-mission frigates, also referred to as Bonifaz class, will be built at Navantia’s Ferrol shipyard in Spain. The project is being co-developed by the Spanish Ministry of Defence and the state-owned company Navantia. The construction of the frigates began in 2020 and the vessels are scheduled to be delivered between 2023 and 2027.
The multi-mission frigates with anti-submarine warfare capabilities will be used in fleet protection, maritime security, joint and combined missions, and to counter conventional and asymmetric threats. The F110-class, which will replace Spanish Navy’s Santa Maria-class frigates, can operate in both blue and littoral waters.
The F110-class frigate will feature an advanced design with a high degree of automation. It will have a length of 145m, a beam of 18m and a draft of 5m. The displacement of the vessel will be 6,100t while the frigate will be manned by 150 crew members.
Kongsberg Maritime specializes in the development and delivery of integrated vessel concepts for traditional merchant vessels, Ro-Pax and fishing vessels, as well as offshore and research vessels and offshore installations. Kongsberg Maritime supplies products and systems for advanced mapping and surveying, sonars, underwater communication, marine robotics (Unmanned Surface Vessels and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles), and also delivers deck machinery, propulsion, electrical, automation and control solutions.
