Few would have thought at the beginning of this year that it would be possible for trade shows to resume.
Aero India , the first airshow of 2021, is not only underway now but is already generating plenty of excitement and news. On the inaugural day, India will sign its largest ever order for an indigenous type when it inks a Rs 480 billion contract with state-owned airframer Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) for 83 Tejas MK-1A light fighters.
HAL in the limelight
HAL is also expected to receive a formal contract from the Indian Ministry of Defence (MoD) for 15 Light Combat Helicopters, in addition to receiving a Request for Quotation (RFQ) from the Indian Air Force (IAF) for the HTT-40 basic trainer aircraft.
HAL will also hand over the first ALH MKIII helicopters to the Indian Navy and Indian Coast Guard (ICG) at the ongoing airshow. The airframer will also be awarded with Initial Operational Clearance for the Army variant of the Light Utility Helicopter (LUH) at Aero India.
In a surprise to those attending the event, HAL also plans to unveil its Manned Unmanned Teaming Teaming (MUM-T) solution called the Combat Air Teaming System (CATS) that is based on LCA Tejas operating alongside various unmanned assets.
The Defence Research & Development Organisation (DRDO) is also showcasing models of the Tejas Mk2 Medium Weight Fighter (MWF), Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) and a show debut for the Twin Engine Deck Based Fighter (TEDBF) configuration.
Flying Display
Despite a reduction in participation by foreign aircraft, the flying displays will feature 42 aircraft primarily from the armed forces, ICG and HAL.
Other aircraft participating in the flying displays include Sukhoi SU-30 MKI, Tejas Light Combat Aircraft (LCA), Sepecat Jaguar, BAE Systems Hawk Mk132, Dornier Do-228, Mil Mi-17 V5, Dhruv Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH), Light Combat Helicopter (LCH), Light Utility Helicopter (LUH), Boeing C-17 Globemaster III, Embraer EMB-145 and Antonov AN-32s. The IAF Vintage Flight will also conduct flypasts with a DC-3 Dakota aircraft.
IAF Dassault Rafale F3-Rs are making their maiden airshow appearance, as are the new Boeing AH-64E Apache and Boeing CH-47I helicopters. The combined flight display of the IAF Suryakiran aerobatic team along with the Sarang Helicopter Display Team will also take place for the first time at the event.
The inaugural day flypast featured participation from aircraft and helicopters belonging to the Indian Air Force (IAF), Indian Army, Indian Navy, Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL).
HAL’s fixed and rotary wing indigenous platforms also made flypasts as part of the ‘Aatmanirbhar Formation Flight’ featuring the LCA trainer (LIFT Trainer), HTT-40, IJT, Advanced Hawk Mk 132 and Civil Do-228. Customer demonstration flights are also being offered on the HTT-40, Advanced Hawk Mk 132 and Civil Do-228.
The static display features more than 60 aircraft from the air force, army, navy, coast guard, HAL and DRDO along with commercial aircraft. Static display will include Do 228, Hindustan Turbo Trainer (HTT)-40 and LUH, ALH Mk III, Mk IV Rudra and ALH Civil. A full-size mock-up of a Sukhoi SU-57 is also on display.
