PT Dahana, an Indonesian state-owned enterprise in explosives Research and Development (R&D) and manufacturing, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and an Non-Disclosure Agreement (NDA) with Schlumberger Geophysics Nusantara (SGN), a subsidiary of Schlumberger Ltd., to build a shaped charge manufacturing facility.
While the collaboration is meant to manufacture shaped charge explosives to be used in the gas and oil sector due to Schlumberger's position as a company in the oilfield industry and services, PT Dahana is also responsible for the R&D and manufacture of explosives for military purposes. It is also interesting to note that the Indonesian Ministry of Defence (Kemhan) is also supervising this joint venture.
“We support and appreciate the achievements of PT Dahana […] in developing processes, products, and or services that are innovative, creative, dynamic and anticipatory to the current market needs," said said the Secretary of the Directorate General of Defense Potential, Indonesian Ministry of Defense (Sesditjen Pothan), Brigadier General Aribowo Teguh Santoso. "This collaboration is also a momentum to realize the independence of the national explosives industry by reducing dependence on imports."
As a country rich with minerals and various other natural resources, Indonesia needs to develop its own mining industries to support the exploration and extraction efforts of these resources. At the same time, Indonesia is also currently expanding its own defence industries with the same goal to reduce the dependency from foreign countries. Therefore, the experience gained by PT Dahana in manufacturing shaped charge explosives for mining industries may also be useful to expand the company’s portfolio.
PT Dahana’s current defence products range includes the warhead of Indonesia’s R-HAN 122 mm rockets for the Indonesian army and marine corps, various blast effect bombs in use by the Indonesian Air Force as well as other related explosives.
