The deal with the Israeli company is part of Morocco’s effort to get advanced weapon systems to be better ready for the conflict with neighboring Algeria.
Barak MX is a modular air defence system that is designed to address missile and aircraft threats. It operates both in marine platforms and land, and belongs to the Barak missile family.
The Barak MX Land Deployable system is capable of simple integration with any existing legacy or new sensors. All Barak MX Land Deployable components (BMC, Launchers with interceptors and Radars) can be operated from permanent infrastructure or can be truck mounted and deployed to temporal operational sites.
According to IAI , Barak MX’s software based modular approach offers flexibility in operation and power build up and ensures simple adaptation to future threats, making it one of the most powerful, all weather, day and night solutions for today’s most challenging of threats.
IAI’s Barak MX interceptors, along with the company’s complete naval combat suite, will provide advanced defense systems to the Israel Navy’s new Sa’ar 6 corvettes. These ships will be used to protect Israel’s exclusive economic zone and strategic facilities that face diversified threats in the marine arena. The Barak MX system was chosen after it was demonstrated to meet the operational requirements and future challenges faced by the Israeli Navy.
As reported by GBP Aerospace & Defence, Morocco is evaluating more types of Israeli made unmanned air systems. This after purchasing 150 Evtol drones – the WanderB and the ThunderB – made by Israeli company Bluebird. The variety of UAV types has grown after Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI ) acquired 50 % of Bluebird. The first contract includes performing some of the production in Morocco.
Morocco has asked Israel to supply its armed forces with a long list of advanced defence systems. The list included different types of drones , radars, communication system and early warning systems and air defence system. Some of the drones that will be produced in Morocco are intended for attack purposes but it can also carry out intelligence gathering missions.
Morocco is the fourth Arab state to establish ties with Israel last year after the signing of the Abraham Accords with some Gulf states.
The sources said that Israel and Morocco are in the process of developing a project to produce “suicide” drones in the kingdom.
Some Israeli companies manufacture UAVs that can carry explosives.
Sources said that the new agreement will allow Morocco to manufacture intelligence gathering and armed drones in commercial quantities and at relatively low costs. In addition, the sources added that the production line in Morocco is close to important export markets.
Israeli sources confirmed that Morocco is interested in the Elta ELM -2084 radar that is part of the Rafael Iron Dome air defence system.
The ELM-2084 Multi-Mission Radar (MMR) detects high and low flying targets, tracks, classifies and generates a real-time Air Situation Picture of all aerial targets such as low Radar Cross Section platforms (e.g. UAVs, tactical aerial weapons, loitering munitions, cruise and Tactical Ballistic Missiles (TBM)) and Rockets, Artillery, and Mortars (RAM).
The MMR’s innovative design delivers high accuracy and rapid update rates, performing concurrent search with dedicated track beam. MMR can acquire targets through external cueing from a C2 system and can operate independently or be integrated into a radar network.
