The first C-130J-30 Super Hercules military transport aircraft for the Indonesian Air Force (TNI-AU) rolled out from Lockheed Martin’s assembly line, as shown on the company’s social media account on Friday (Aug. 6).
As part of five C-130J-30 aircraft for the TNI-AU of which the contract was signed in 2019, TNI-AU expects the first Super Hercules to be delivered by the end of 2022 or early 2023. The service plans to induct all five aircraft into the 31st Air Squadron based in Halim Perdanakusuma Air Force Base, Jakarta.
The Indonesian Air Force is currently operating about 20 C-130s, most of which are the B variant that the service acquired in the 1960s. The acquisition of five C-130J-30 aircraft is meant to replace some of the 31st squadron’s C-130Bs which will likely be retired from service.
It’s expected that Indonesia may have another follow-on order for more C-130J in the future as part of the country’s military modernization program.
The C-130J-30 Super Hercules is a long-body variant of the C-130J Hercules military airlifter with a 4.6 meters extended fuselage. The J-30 variant has a length of 34.69 meters, 11.9 meters in height, and a 39.7 meters wingspan. Powered by four Rolls-Royce AE 2100D3 turboprop engines each delivering about 4,700 hp and driving a 6-bladed Dowty R391 propeller, the aircraft has a maximum speed of about 670 km/h or Mach 0.59, and a ceiling of 26,000 feet (8,000 meters). Under a cruise speed of 644 km/h and with a maximum payload of 19,958 kilograms, the C-130J-30 has a maximum range of about 1,700 nautical miles (3148.4 km).
Since its first flight in 1996, over 500 C-130J have been produced and delivered to over 26 operators in 22 countries.
