In-flight entertainment (IFE) in Vietnamese carriers is still in its infancy, but some airlines have woken up to the possibilities in the sector and the need to provide better customer satisfaction to passengers.
Not all Vietnamese airlines or flights have IFE, but Vietnam Airlines, the national carrier, has launched a new Wireless IFE technology to help users access movie and music entertainment stores using personal devices such as laptops, phones and tablets, on flights under 3 hours,
Although a new bird in the sky of Vietnam’s aviation, Bamboo Airways has grasped technology trends and is meeting the needs of users. In August 2019, Bamboo Airways launched a partnership with Touch Aero to let passengers connect to the entertainment data system using their personal devices. From May 2022, customers on the carrier’s wide-body Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner can access IFE with personal screens at their seats.
The progress Vietnam carriers are showing comes at a time when modern technology is leading to major breakthroughs in the sector. On Oct. 20 this year, SpaceX launched the Starlink Aviation internet service to provide Wifi on private jets. The new service enables passengers to engage in activities that were previously not possible in-flight, including video calling, online gaming, or other high-data-requiring tasks.
With customer satisfaction ranking high on the priority list of airlines, IFE has become one of the key factors to evaluate services. Airlines around the world have been developing a variety of in-flight entertainment to ensure an enjoyable experience for passengers. Compared with the rapid development of advanced technologies in the field, IFE technologies of Vietnamese airlines are still in the nascent stage, with such facilities not available on all flights and routes.
According to industry analysts, Vietnamese airlines need to transform quickly, and update digital entertainment technologies on all routes and flights to adapt to technology innovation and meet the increasing demands of passengers. Carriers in the country need to act quickly as Vietnam is facing an explosion in demand for air travel, with the industry growth rate touching double digits and being the highest in Southeast Asia.
Globally, Emirates is a pioneer in applying, innovating and driving in-flight entertainment. Since the 1990s, the carrier has installed personal entertainment screens on each passenger seat, providing passengers with a unique cinema and music entertainment. By 1995, the entertainment content was upgraded and expanded to 20 channels. Emirates was the first airline to allow users to use mobile phones in flight.
