Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), India’s state-owned airframer has made the maiden flight of the first series production standard LCA Trainer (LT 5201).

The trainer aircraft made its maiden flight from HAL airport in Bangalore and landed after completing a successful sortie of around 35 minutes.

Company officials said the first flight of the series production Tejas trainer was a major milestone in the LCA Tejas Programme.

The delay in the delivery of the trainer aircraft is indicative of the delays encountered in the Tejas programme.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) had originally contracted HAL for 20 Initial Operational Clearance (IOC) standard Tejas aircraft (16 IOC fighters and 4 IOC trainers) in March 2006. These 20 aircraft, were to have originally been delivered by December 2011.

The air force inked a follow-on order with HAL for 20 Final Operational Clearance (FOC) standard Tejas aircraft (16 FOC fighters and 4 FOC trainers) on 23rd December 2010 to be completed by December 2016.

With the delays in delivery, all eight trainer aircraft will be built to FOC configuration.
