Fincantieri and the Indonesian Ministry of Defence signed a 1.18-billion-euro contract for the supply of two Thaon di Revel-class Multipurpose Offshore Patrol Vessel (OPV) ships on Thursday (Mar. 28). These highly flexible ships, also known as Pattugliatore Polivalente d’Altura (PPA) in Italy, boast advanced technological standards and can undertake various tasks, including patrol, sea rescue, civil protection, and frontline combat.
The ships, initially designated for the Italian Navy, are currently under construction and fitting at the Integrated Shipyard in Riva Trigoso-Muggiano.
The Indonesian Ministry of Defence’s interest in PPA units follows the Maritime Campaign in the Far East of the Italian Navy’s Thaon di Revel-class OPV, the Francesco Morosini, which visited Indonesia in July 2023. This deal is expected to foster synergies in operational, industrial, and technological realms between the two nations, aiding Indonesia in safeguarding its national interests and enhancing stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
Fincantieri will serve as the prime contractor for the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, overseeing coordination with partners like Leonardo for customizing the ships’ combat systems and providing related logistical services. Relevant agreements will be formulated in compliance with applicable legislation, including regulations governing transactions between related authorities.
“This contract is a milestone for the development of a strategic partnership between our Group and Indonesia. We view this as the first of many significant collaborative opportunities with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, following a long-term partnership approach thanks to the structural support of our institutions, starting with the Ministry of Defence and the Italian Navy,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri.
“Southeast Asia is a region of central geopolitical importance where Fincantieri aims to strengthen its presence, as defined in the Business Plan,” he added.
Each PPA measures 143 meters in length, with a beam of 16.5 meters, a draft of 5 meters, and a displacement of approximately 6,000 tonnes. Powered by combined diesel and gas turbine (CODAG) propulsion, they can reach speeds of up to 32 knots and cover a range of 9,300 km (5,000 nautical miles) at a cruising speed of 15 knots.
Each ship in this class is designed to be armed with an Oto Melara 127 mm/64 Vulcano main gun, two Oerlikon KBA B06 25 mm cannons, 16 Aster-30 surface-to-air missiles within a Sylver Vertical Launching System (VLS), eight Teseo\Otomat surface-to-surface missiles, and twin triple launchers for 324 mm torpedoes for anti-submarine warfare.
The Thaon di Revel-class PPA is crewed by approximately 170 personnel and is equipped to handle high-speed vessels like RHIBs up to 11 meters in length, launched via lateral cranes or a stern hauling ramp.
