Defense Technology Institute (DTI) Thailand has delivered two prototypes of the 105mm light howitzer CS/AH2 to the Artillery Battalion, Artillery Center, Royal Thai Army (RTA) at Bhumibol Camp in Lopburi Province, Thailand last month. The project, a collaboration between DTI and the Artillery Center of the Royal Thai Army, has been in progress for some time.
Following rigorous testing, including shooting tests and demonstrations throughout 2023 at the Khao Phu Lon Artillery Shooting Range, the prototypes have now been transferred to the Artillery Battalion. This unit serves as the “Instructor Gun Battalion,” responsible for training artillery soldiers within the service.
The initiative began with a contract announcement between DTI Thailand and Poly Technologies, Inc., a subsidiary of China Poly Group Corporation, in September 2021. The initial phase of the joint research and development project received a budget of THB 48 million (about USD 1.4 million). Subsequently, a memorandum of understanding signed between DTI and the Artillery Center of the Royal Thai Army in March 2023 paved the way for the creation, testing, and delivery of the prototypes.
The CS/AH2 represents a significant step forward in Thailand’s artillery capabilities. Notably, the prototype bears resemblance to the BAE Systems M119 (L119) light cannon, which has been in use with the Royal Thai Army since 2006.
Equipped with advanced features including a digital fire control system and a satellite coordinate system, the CS/AH2 105mm light cannon promises enhanced performance. This includes a soil temperature measurement system to optimize air current bullet trajectories and integration with Forward Observation Officers (FOO).
The introduction of the CS/AH2 comes at a time when the Royal Thai Army seeks to modernize its artillery arsenal, replacing outdated systems such as the M425 rubber-wheeled self-propelled artillery light cannons and the M618A2 towed light artillery, both of which have been in use for an extended period.
