Transport Canada Civil Aviation has recently granted type certification to Pratt & Whitney Canada (P&WC) PW545D engine, marking an important milestone toward its eventual deployment. This certification, received on May 9, brings the engine closer to potential service use.

In May 2023, Textron Aviation had announced its intention to utilize twin PW545D engines to power its new Cessna Citation Ascend business jet. It’s worth noting that P&WC operates under the umbrella of RTX.

“As the latest derivative in the PW500 engine family, we look forward to the Ascend’s entry into service,” said Cedric Gauthier, vice president, Sales and Marketing, General Aviation, Pratt & Whitney Canada. “Certification was granted following 630 hours of engine testing, in addition to 230 hours of flight testing on the Ascend prototype test aircraft.”

According to the company, the PW545D engine boasts several advancements, including an enhanced mixer and improvements in compressor and turbine efficiency. These enhancements result in reduced fuel consumption and operating temperatures. Additionally, the engine features Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) technology, a standard feature across many PW500 models. This technology facilitates the integration of new auto-throttle systems in aircraft like the Citation Ascend, streamlining engine operation, enhancing efficiency, and reducing pilot workload.

Presently, there are approximately 4,600 PW500 engines in active service, with over 5,000 units manufactured. This fleet has collectively amassed approximately 24.5 million hours of flight time. Notably, PW500 engines power various aircraft within Textron Aviation’s lineup, including the Cessna Citation Bravo, Excel, XLS, XLS+, Ultra Encore, and Encore+. Apart from business jets, Textron Aviation also produces twin- and single-engine turboprops, many of which are equipped with P&WC engines.
