Korean Air has revised its cabin service protocols to bolster passenger and crew safety in response to increasing turbulence incidents, effective from 1 July.
The airline will now conclude cabin services on all medium and long-haul flights 40 minutes prior to landing, 20 minutes earlier than the previous schedule. This adjustment aims to complete inflight services before the aircraft begins its descent.
Turbulence incidents have been on the rise, doubling in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the same period in 2019. The increasing frequency of this incident, particularly during descent, is attributed to significant temperature variations between altitudes. To mitigate these risks, Korean Air has decided to end cabin services prior to descent.
When the aircraft encounters potential turbulence, an alert and the “fasten seat belt” sign are activated. Passengers must immediately follow crew instructions and secure themselves with their seat belts fastened.
Encounters with sudden turbulence or clear-air turbulence (CAT) are common, making it essential for passengers to wear seat belts at all times for safety. Passengers are also advised to store carry-on baggage in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of them to prevent injuries during sudden occurences.
In response to the recent trends in turbulence, Korean Air is conducting a comprehensive review of its service strategies to ensure the highest standards of safety and improving travel experience for its passengers.
