As the geopolitical landscape in Southeast Asia continues to evolve, the need for advanced military capabilities has never been more crucial. Saab, a leading aerospace and defence company, is actively positioning itself to support the Philippines in strengthening its air power. Following their recent success in Thailand, where they secured a contract to supply Gripen fighter jets, Saab is keen to showcase the advantages of their offerings at the ADAS 2024 exhibition in Manila.
Jussi Halmetoja, Air Operations Advisor and Test Pilot from Saab, highlighted the company's commitment to providing cutting-edge solutions tailored to the specific needs of the Philippine Air Force.
What can you tell us about Saab's current offering to the Philippines following the company's win in Thailand recently?
"We are very excited to be here. We have a full-scale replica on display at the parking space here at the ADAS exhibition hall. The advantage of the Gripen E/F for the Philippines lies in its incorporation of the most modern technologies and the best sensor suite in the world today. These features significantly enhance situational awareness for the pilot."
He continued, "With game-changing weapons such as the Meteor and RBS-15 long-range anti-ship missiles, combined with the proven, world-class reliability and high availability of the aircraft fleet, the Gripen provides the flexibility to operate from small airstrips or roads. This combination positions us to offer the Philippines a credible, sustainable, and cost-effective offensive air power capability."
Saab's recent victory in Thailand involved a comprehensive package that not only includes the Gripen fighter jets but also extends to training, maintenance, and support systems, ensuring that the Royal Thai Air Force can effectively integrate these advanced aircraft into their operations. This success underscores Saab's ability to deliver tailored solutions and strong partnership support, which they are now looking to replicate in the Philippines.
Are there any similarities in Saab's Gripen offering between Thailand and the Philippines, particularly regarding technology transfer and related matters?
"I believe the approach we take is somewhat tailored to each nation's specific requirements, overall processes, and plans. However, Saab is always prepared to support not only the aircraft's capabilities but also to engage in industrial collaboration, offset requirements, and any technology transfers that the Philippine Air Force desires. The precise requirements are up to the Department of National Defense to articulate, but we are excited and fully ready to assist."
This also depends on the readiness of each country, I presume?
"Oh yes, absolutely."
Reflecting on regional security concerns, Halmetoja emphasised Saab's commitment to the Philippines, stating, "We are aware that there are ongoing challenges in the West Philippine Sea, and we look forward to contributing to the Philippines' Re-Horizon program, especially in relation to the Multi-Role Fighter acquisition program. Saab is prepared to fully support the country throughout this process."
