Israel to Seek Expedited Delivery of F-15 IA Fighter Jets

Arie Egozi - : Oct 2, 2024 - : 8:49 pm

In view of the growing tension between Israel and some of the Iranian proxies in the region, the Israeli ministry of defence will ask the U.S to expedite the delivery of the Boeing F-15 IA advanced fighter jet.

In recent weeks, the Israeli air force made two massive attacks on installations of the Houthi rebels in Yemen. The strikes came after repeated attacks by the terrorist group aimed at hitting Israeli cities. The attacks were performed by Iranian-made long range ballistic missiles and armed drones.

The need for the advanced aircraft has become even more critical as the tensions with Iran reach the threshold of a full war. On Oct. 1, Iran launched 181 ballistic missiles to hit targets in Israel. Most of these missiles were intercepted by the Israel Arrow 2 and Arrow 3 . An Israeli retaliation is expected .

The accelerated hostilities with Iran explains the pressure exerted by the Israeli airfroce (IAF) to increase the number of Boeing F-15 IA to 50 and to start deliveries as soon as possible. In January, the Israeli ministry of defence issued the letter of request (LOR) for 25 F-15 EX (IA – Israeli advanced).

In 2020 , the Israeli government made a general decision to acquire additional F-35 and F-15. But while the contract for the F-35 has been signed, the one for the advanced F-15 remained on paper. But the IAF has since expressed an urgent need for more F-15 that can be loaded with weapon systems developed in Israel that are tailored to destroy “hardened ” targets, like the Iranian nuclear sites.

The F-15EX carries more weapons than any other fighter in its class, and can launch hypersonic weapons up to 22 feet long and weighing up to 7,000 pounds. The IAF wants 25 F-15 EX, and also wants to upgrade its 25 F-15I’s to the same avionic configuration of the F-15 EX , except for the fly by wire system. An Israeli defence source said that budget limitations may hinder Israeli efforts to get earlier deliveries of the F-15 IA.

The IAF operates 50 F-15 A/B/C/D . In addition, the force operates 25 F-15 I. A defence source said that now that the LOR has been issued , the earliest first deliveries of the F-15 EX are expected in 2029. The planned deliveries in 2029 are based on the next MOU between Israel and the U.S for the next ten years foreign military funds (FMF). The Israeli government may ask the U.S to start deliveries earlier.

The current US$38 billion FMF agreement will expire in 2028 . Israel planns to fund the purchase of the F-15IA with money from the new FMF agreement. But the development in the region makes the need for this aircraft more urgent.

For Israel to get early deliveries, the U.S airforce will have to give up some of the planned production slots for the aircraft. Israeli sources said that there is no solution at this point, but efforts continue.
