Israel Accelerates the Deployment of Laser-based Air Defence Systems.

Elbit Systems has been awarded a contract worth approximately USD 200 million by the Israeli Ministry of Defence (IMOD) to supply high-power laser systems for the "Iron Beam" air defence system. The Iron Beam system was developed by Rafael, with Elbit responsible for the laser generator component.

Under the contract, Elbit Systems will provide the IMOD with its high-power laser solution as part of the Iron Beam project, enhancing defence capabilities against a variety of threats. The contract also includes ongoing support services.

Bezhalel (Butzi) Machlis, President and CEO of Elbit Systems, said: “As Israel's Laser Center and a global leader in high-power laser technology, Elbit Systems congratulates on the significant progress made in the "Iron Beam" project and is proud of its contribution to its success. The capabilities developed at Elbit Systems represent a leap forward in future defence against various threats."

The Israeli Ministry of Defence and the Israeli Air Force’s Air Defence Array expect to deploy the world’s first laser defence system, the Rafael-made Iron Beam, along Israel’s borders within approximately a year. Regions bordering Gaza, Lebanon, and Syria are ideal for the system, which has been in development for nearly 20 years. The laser system will operate alongside the Iron Dome system, also developed by Rafael and in service since 2011.

Iron Dome's control and command algorithms will determine when to activate the lasers, when to launch its kinetic interceptors, known as Tamir missiles, and which Tamir type to deploy. Some Tamir interceptors carry specialised cameras, while others are radar-guided.

Similar to the Iron Dome, the laser system can intercept rockets, mortar shells, UAVs, and missiles. However, it is intended to complement, not replace, the Iron Dome. The Iron Dome has historically intercepted over 90% of aerial threats launched from Gaza toward Israeli communities. On 7 October 2023, amid a barrage of approximately 3,000 rockets launched by Hamas and Palestinian insurgents in a single day, the Iron Dome intercepted numerous threats that day and in subsequent days.
