Argentina’s Minister of Defence, Dr Luis Alfonso Petri, has commenced an official visit to Israel, where he was welcomed by Israel’s Defence Minister, Israel Katz. The visit highlights Argentina’s support for Israel during its ongoing conflict and reflects a commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
During discussions, Mr Katz proposed initiating a multi-year joint programme involving strategic workshops and seminars on topics of shared interest. The initiative aims to enhance strategic dialogue and deepen cooperation between the two nations.
Dr Petri also held talks with Maj Gen (Res.) Eyal Zamir, the Director General of Israel’s Ministry of Defence. The discussions covered regional and global security issues, including Iran’s activities in the Middle East and Latin America. Both sides underlined the need for sustained collaboration to promote stability in their respective regions.
As part of the dialogue, Dr Petri conveyed a message from Argentine President Dr Javier Milei, affirming Argentina’s support for Israel’s right to self-defence. He characterised Israel’s conflict as both a national struggle and a broader battle by the global community against terrorism and threats to civilisation.
The visit was facilitated by the Argentine Ambassador to Israel, Mr Axel Wahnish, and his Israeli counterpart in Argentina, Eyal Sela. They worked together to coordinate the meetings and structure the programme, which focused on fostering cooperation.
The discussions also resulted in agreements to expand defence collaboration. Areas of focus include joint projects in cyber defence, unmanned aerial systems, border security, satellite communications, and government-to-government contracts involving light arms, munitions, and communications equipment.
The visit underscores the commitment of both nations to enhancing their partnership in security and defence while strengthening their broader relationship.
