Malaysia will equip one of its Lekiu-class frigates with the Naval Strike Missile (NSM), an anti-ship surface-to-surface missile developed by Norway’s Kongsberg. The Royal Malaysian Navy plans to install the new missile system on KD Jebat (FFGH-29), the first ship of the Lekiu-class frigates.
KD Jebat entered service in November 1999 and is currently armed with Exocet MM40 anti-ship missiles. The integration of the NSM system is part of efforts to enhance its capabilities.
The NSM missiles, initially acquired for the Maharaja Lela-class frigates, are being reassigned due to delays in the problematic Maharaja Lela project. Kongsberg had secured a €125 million (£109 million) contract in 2018 to supply these missiles to the Royal Malaysian Navy.
KD Jebat is one of two Lekiu-class frigates built by UK-based Yarrow Shipbuilders, now BAE Systems Surface Ships. The ship has a displacement of 2,300 tonnes, measures 106 metres in length, has a beam of 12.8 metres, and a draft of 3.6 metres. Powered by four diesel engines producing 11,931 kW, it can reach speeds of 28 knots with a maximum range of 5,000 miles (8,000 km). KD Jebat also has facilities to operate a Super Lynx Mk.100 anti-submarine warfare (ASW) helicopter. The ship carries a crew of 146, including 18 officers.
The frigate’s current armament includes a Bofors 57 mm gun, two MSI DS30M 30 mm cannons, and missile systems comprising 16 Sea Wolf surface-to-air missiles and 8 MM40 Exocet block 2 anti-ship missiles. Additionally, it is fitted with two triple Eurotorp B515 launchers for A244-S torpedoes used in anti-submarine warfare.
