Indonesia Renames Italian-Built Warships at Fincantieri Shipyard

A renaming ceremony was held at Fincantieri’s Muggiano shipyard on Wednesday (Jan. 29) for two Multipurpose Combat Ships / Pattugliatore Polivalente d'Altura (MPCS / PPA) built at the company’s Riva Trigoso-Muggiano facility. The event was attended by Fincantieri Chairman Biagio Mazzotta, General Manager of the Naval Vessels Division Dario Deste, Chief of the Indonesian Navy Admiral Muhammad Ali, and Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto.

The two vessels, formerly named "Marcantonio Colonna (P433)" and "Ruggiero di Lauria (P435)," have been acquired by the Indonesian Navy and renamed "KRI Brawijaya (320)" and "KRI Prabu Siliwangi (321)." These ships, expected to become the largest combat vessels in the Indonesian fleet, are scheduled for delivery in 2025.

The ceremony follows a contract signed in 2024 between the Indonesian Ministry of Defence and Fincantieri, valued at EUR 1.18 billion. The agreement reflects defence cooperation between Indonesia and Italy in the naval sector.

Originally intended for the Italian Navy as part of the Thaon di Revel class Offshore Patrol Vessels (OPVs), the ships are 143 metres long, with a beam of 16.5 metres and a displacement of approximately 6,250 tonnes. They are armed with a 127 mm naval gun, a 76 mm gun, two 25 mm cannons, and missiles for anti-aircraft and anti-ship/land attack roles. Each vessel can carry and operate two medium-sized helicopters for anti-submarine warfare and transport operations.

Powered by a combined propulsion system consisting of a 32,000 kW (43,000 hp) gas turbine and two 10,000 kW (13,000 hp) diesel engines, the ships can reach speeds exceeding 31 knots. Their operational range is 9,300 km (5,000 nautical miles) at a cruising speed of 15 knots. The crew complement varies between 90 and 120 personnel, depending on configuration.

Alongside the acquisition of these ships, the Indonesian Navy is also constructing two Frigat Merah-Putih (FMP) warships at PT PAL’s shipyard. Based on Babcock’s Arrowhead 140 design, these vessels are expected to be completed by 2029. With the addition of the Italian-built ships and the FMP frigates, the Indonesian Navy aims to enhance its capabilities in the region.
