On a New Path to Progress
The second edition of Egypt Defence Expo (EDEX) assumes added
significance in the light of the fact that it is being held at a time when
Egypt’s military relationship with the U.S., which has for long been the
bedrock of the country’s defence capabilities, is seeing a subtle shift.
With Egypt no longer depending solely on Washington for weapons
purchases and continuing its efforts to diversify its base of arms
suppliers, EDEX has attracted plenty of interest from international
exhibitors, some of them attending the event for the first time.
EDEX 2021 also presents a prime opportunity for Egypt to showcase
the significant progress its domestic defence industry has made in
recent years. The extensive equipment revitalization programme that
the Egyptian Armed Forces (EAF) have embarked on gives countries
such as Russia, France, Germany and China a chance to build on the
recent success they have had in exporting arms to the Middle Eastern
country. The U.S. has for long strived to keep its principal adversaries
– Russia and China – as far away from Egypt and the Middle East as it
can. It would be interesting to watch how the Biden administration
reacts to the two countries, especially Russia, continuing to sell
weapons to Egypt.
