Airbus Eurodrone Completes Preliminary Design Review

Our Bureau - : May 16, 2024 - : 7:37 pm

Airbus Defence and Space, leading the Eurodrone programme, has concluded the Preliminary Design Review (PDR) milestone. This achievement, overseen by OCCAR and representatives from France, Germany, Italy, and Spain, along with major subcontractors Airbus Defence and Space Spain, Dassault Aviation, and Leonardo, marks a crucial advancement in the programme’s progress.

The completion of the PDR indicates a matured initial design for the aircraft, clearing the path for detailed design phases. Various technical assessments, including Wind Tunnel Testing to verify aerodynamic configurations, overall design assessments for operational capability, and validation of a fully representative Digital Twin, have contributed to this milestone. The Eurodrone programme integrates both physical and digital design approaches from its inception.

With the knowledge amassed, the Eurodrone programme now moves into the Critical Design Review (CDR) phase, marking the final stage in architecture and system design refinement.

“Performing the Preliminary Design Review for the development of Eurodrone represents an important step forward for this key European defence programme,” said Jean-Brice Dumont, Head of Air Power at Airbus Defence and Space. “It shows a real joint effort and collaborative spirit from all industrial partners and the Customer community to ensure European sovereignty and independence in this critical segment of unmanned long endurance ISTAR capability.”

Equipped with advanced technology, the Eurodrone is envisioned as a cornerstone of future combat air systems, essential for international conflict prevention and crisis management. Its capabilities in Intelligence, Surveillance, Target Acquisition, and Reconnaissance (ISTAR) missions are poised to enhance operational superiority for participating nations.
