Conflicts in Eastern Europe and the Middle East continue to demonstrate the lethality of precision targeted rocket, artillery and mortar fire; especially when supported with the real-time target acquisition capabilities afforded by UAVs and drones. The ability to quickly close the firing loop using these small, difficult to counter, aerial surveillance, reconnaissance and targeting tools has made the threat of indirect fire more dangerous than ever. The potential damage is further increased when mobile forces must operate in difficult terrain, where ingress routes are often limited and the enemy is able to focus on choke points and obstacles, natural or engineered. And of course, the threat of direct aerial attack, whether from crewed orun-crewed platforms is always present.
To overcome these threats, it is imperative that maneuvering forces have the integral ability to detect, classify and counter them. They must be able to anticipate incoming fire and quickly direct accurate counterfire to destroy or disrupt the threatening batteries. They must also be able to detect the dangerous presence of UAVs and drones, which are instrumental in target detection and fire control, and which can also serve as guided weapons in their own right. There is only one single sensor that can provide a solution to this range of requirements – a modern, multi- mission C-RAM radar system.
To deliver the needed capabilities and performance in a compact, highly mobile package, Israel Aerospace Industries' innovative sensors and systems subsidiary, ELTA Systems Ltd. (IAI ELTA), leveraged its sixty-year legacy in radar system design & development and its unique know-how as a pioneer in active electronically scanned array (AESA) technology to design the ELM-2311 C-MMR. A compact, high performance multi- mission Doppler radar, CMMR is based on IAI ELTA’s highly successful MMR family of radars, with over 170 systems in service worldwide and a proven combat record as the key sensor in the well-known Iron Dome system.
Small and light enough for deployment from a single 6X6 or 8X8 vehicle and operated by only two crewmembers, this versatile radar system is able to escort maneuvering forces in challenging terrain and extreme weather, providing an array of capabilities that required multiple radar types in the past.
C-MMR operates in two main modes: Weapons Locating System (WLS) and Air Defence (AD). In WLS mode the radar detects incoming mortar rounds, artillery shells, rockets and missiles. It calculates impact (IP) and launch points (LP), performing Hostile Weapons Location (HWL) in real time while concurrently providing friendly fire ranging (FFR), facilitating highly accurate counter battery fire for an immediate and effective response.
C-MMR delivers the simultaneous capability to both accurately pinpoint the source of enemy fire while at the same time correcting friendly fire, ensuring quick and efficient target destruction. Uniquely, C-MMR performs both missions in parallel without the need to switch between detection and ranging modes. A single C-MMR can simultaneously support up to ten, modern, long- range artillery batteries with these powerful capabilities. In AD mode, the radar detects and classifies all types of airborne targets, including UAVs, to generate a real-time Air Situation Picture (ASP).
With its winning combination of performance and mobility, IAI ELTA's C-MMR radar gives maneuvering forces the offensive and defensive edge needed for success on the modern battlefield.
