Our Bureau - : Feb 17, 2024 - : 1:43 am

ASELSAN delivered the first two modernized M60T tanks to the Turkish Land Forces on 10th February 2024. The project is an effort to increase these tanks’ capabilities and survivability in today’s battlefields.

The extent of the modifications can be illustrated by the comment from Prof. Dr. Haluk Görgün, the President of Turkish Defence Industry Agency, who stated that, “Tanks are now equipped with advanced sensors and systems, resembling large walking computers.”

“Tanks are one of the important manoeuvre items of land operations, with its fire, speed and armour power it continues to be one of the main weapons on the battlefield,” said General Selçuk Bayraktaroğlu, Commander of the Turkish Land Forces in the same event.

“Thanks to ASELSAN’s modernization of M60T tanks, we will earlier detect the enemy, hit more precisely and destroy from further distance. I am proud to raise this tank making us more powerful, to our military inventory,” he added.

“As ASELSAN we have become today an ambitious company in the world when it comes to tank modernization,” said Ahmet Akyol, ASELSAN’s President & CEO, underlining the company’s ability to produce all systems in-house used on a tank.

“We proved this by undertaken the modernization project of the Leopard tanks owned by Chilean army. We also fulfilled the modernization of the T-72 tanks. We provided all electronic systems with success for the Turkish Main Battle Tank Project (ALTAY). Within the scope of modernization projects, we had the chance to apply these sub-systems to other armoured vehicles.”

The M60T modernization project, part of the FIRAT-M60T Project, enhances tank capabilities. ASELSAN localized the Fire Control System, reducing external dependence on electronic systems.

To bolster tank protection against threats, ASELSAN integrated additional systems like the VOLKAN-M Fire Control System, enhanced communication systems and many other improvements.

The M60T modernization project will be extended to other M60 tanks in the country’s Land Forces Command’s inventory.
