Brian West to Take Over as Boeing CFO

Our Bureau - : Jul 6, 2021 - : 12:33 am

Brian West, CFO of financial market data provider Refinitiv, has been appointed Boeing Chief Financial Officer. He will succeed  Greg Smith on August 27.

Boeing has named senior vice president Dave Dohnalek as interim financial chief until West takes over.  West spent 16 years at GE, where he served as CFO of its aviation and engine services businesses.

Boeing Chief Executive Officer David Calhoun and West are former colleagues at GE. While West was with the conglomerate from 1990 to 2007, Calhoun had an even bigger stint, leaving the company in 2006 after 26 years.

“I have had the pleasure of working with Brian previously, and he is an exceptional leader,” Calhoun said in a statement.

Before joining Refinitiv, West was the CFO and Executive Vice President of Operations of Oscar Insurance Corporation from January 2016 to November 2018. Prior to that, he was the COO of Nielsen Holdings from March 2014 to January 2016 and the CFO of the company from February 2007 to March 2014.  When West joined Nielsen, it was headed by Calhoun.

West, who has been Refinitiv CFO since 2018 , is joining  Boeing at a crucial time, with the company having to deal with the  737 Max crisis and the grounding of the jet for almost two years.  Another problem that the company is dealing with is structural problems in the 787 Dreamliner that has the potential to affect 893 out of a total of 982 of the wide-body jets.

In January Boeing reported a record US$11.9 billion loss for the 2020 financial year, which included a US$6.5 billion charge on its latest jet, the wide-body 777X. The arrival of the coronavirus pandemic decimated demand for international air travel which, when combined with the 737 MAX crisis and consequential additional scrutiny of the 777X, will see first deliveries postponed until 2023, two years behind schedule.
