Croatia’s flag carrier and a member of Star Alliance, Croatia Airlines, has taken delivery of its first A220-300 aircraft at the Airbus Mirabel site in Canada. This delivery is part of the airline’s fleet renewal project, the largest in its history, coinciding with its 35th anniversary. This aircraft is the first of the 13 A220-300 and two A220-100 aircraft the airline has committed to.

According to Airbus, the A220 introduces greater efficiency for the airline, with 25% lower fuel burn and CO2 emissions per seat compared to previous generation aircraft, a 50% reduction in noise footprint and approximately 40% lower NOx emissions than industry standards. It can already operate with up to 50% Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), with Airbus aiming for all its aircraft to use up to 100% SAF by 2030. The A220 is expected to help reduce Croatia Airlines’ operating costs and environmental impact.

Designed specifically for the 100-150 seat market, the A220 can fly non-stop up to 3,600 nautical miles or 6,700 kilometres. This capability will support Croatia Airlines’ network expansion and enhance service quality and passenger satisfaction. The aircraft features state-of-the-art aerodynamics, advanced materials, and Pratt & Whitney’s latest-generation GTF engines, along with an innovative cabin design offering the widest seats, largest windows, and most spacious bins in its class.

As of the end of June 2024, about 30 customers have ordered more than 900 A220 aircraft, establishing its position in the small single-aisle market. Over 340 A220s are currently in operation on more than 1,400 routes to over 440 destinations worldwide, with over 100 million passengers having flown on the A220 to date.
