Ekovar Promotes the Green Way of Demilitarising Ammunition

At first glance, Turkish recycling company Ekovar looks a little out of place at the ongoing show. Dig deeper and you realise you are mistaken.

The company is highlighting its capabilities to safely dispose of and recycle used ammunition. The only company of its kind in the country, Ekovar is now looking for work with potential partners in the Middle East and in other regions to help countries demilitarise and recycle large quantities of ammunition, said Ahmet Demir, Business Development Manager.

“We can either transport the used ammunition to our facility in Turkey or work with potential partners in their own countries,” said Demir. “The way used ammunition is disposed of now in many places harms the environment. Our demilitarisation process is unique and sustainable. There is no discharge of toxic materials to the ground, water or air.”

Among the ammunition that the company demilitarises are all types of grenades, small arms ammunition, aircraft bomb, and tank ammunition. The company disassembles used or surplus ammunition manually using safe hand tools, before reducing the size of munitions and removing energetic material from them. Special techniques are used for destroying energetic material or for converting it to less toxic and energetic products. The ammunition is then recycled. One of the potential uses of the recovered energetics is in new munitions.

According to Demir, the company’s explosive waste incinerator (EWI) can handle a wide variety of bulk explosive and propellant wastes and small calibre cartridges up to 20 mm. The EWI has a pollution control system that meets or exceeds the emission levels stipulated by EU regulations and Turkish laws. The scrap metal from munitions casing is released for commercial use after ensuring that all traces of energetic materials or toxic substances is removed.
