Spanish defence firm EXPAL Systems has started development of its own guidance systems. The first project which is now underway is a guidance system for 120mm mortar grenades and is being undertaken in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Defence. “We have completely verticalized the weapon, ammunition, propulsion and fuze, so it is a natural step to also verticalize the guidance and incorporate it into our product portfolio,” says Stéphane Plantinet, Marketing Director of the Company.
The development of the 120mm mortar grenade guidance system will also be scalable to 155mm and has been initiated in collaboration with the Spanish Ministry of Defence through the DGAM Coincident programme. “The new system responds to the needs of equipment and material of the Army marked in the Spanish Land Force 2035 project. We begin with guidance for mortar ammunition because it is a field in which we are experts,” adds Plantinet.
EXPAL will be introducing improvements with regards to the algorithms and electronics, in addition to mechanical strengthening the 120mm mortar grenade guidance system as compared to existing systems.
The guidance system will also have the ability to make use of the European Galileo Global Positioning System (GPS).
The new 120mm mortar grenade guidance system will provide ammunition with greater precision strike capability, in order to reduce collateral damage and achieve greater survivability as a result of improved anti-jamming capability.
EXPAL Systems has supplied 60, 81 and 120mm mortar systems and ammunition, to more than 10 European countries and more than 35 nations globally.
All European contracts for 81 mm mortars in the last 10 years have been provided by Expal, including Spain, Italy, Czech Republic, Belgium and Portugal.
EXPAL received contracts from the armies of Morocco and Philippines for the supply of mortar systems in 2019.
