Fincantieri marked an important milestone with the launch of the seventh PPA (Multipurpose Combat Ship), named “Domenico Millelire,” at the company’s shipyard in Riva Trigoso, Genova, on Saturday (Jul. 13).

The ceremony, graced by Vice Admiral Giuseppe Berutti Bergotto, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Italian Navy, and Massimo Scialpi, Deputy Director of OCCAR, saw Dario Deste, General Manager of the Naval Vessels Division at Fincantieri, welcoming guests. Ms. Franca Millelire, a relative of Domenico Millelire, honoured the vessel as its godmother.

Part of the Italian Navy’s vessel renewal plan, approved by the Government and Parliament under the auspices of OCCAR, the PPA is a versatile ship designed for various missions, including patrol, sea rescue, and Civil Protection operations. In its fully equipped configuration, it serves as a frontline combat vessel, offering different combat system setups from a “soft” version for patrol tasks to a “full” version capable of complete defence.

Measuring 143 metres in length overall, the PPA boasts a top speed exceeding 31 knots and accommodates a crew of 171 persons. It features a combined diesel and gas turbine plant (CODAG) alongside an electric propulsion system. Notably, the vessel can supply drinking water to shore and operate high-speed vessels such as RHIBs up to 11 metres long via lateral cranes or a stern hauling ramp.

The PPA ships are constructed at Fincantieri’s Integrated Shipyard in Riva Trigoso and Muggiano, with deliveries scheduled through 2026.
