Fincantieri to Build Fourth U212NFS Submarine for Italian Navy

The Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’Armement (OCCAR) has commissioned Fincantieri to construct the fourth submarine in the U212NFS (Near Future Submarine) program for the Italian Navy. This contract, valued at approximately EUR 500 million, includes Integrated Logistic Support and In-Service Support. Additionally, the agreement activates options that complete maintenance support for previously contracted submarines.

The contract was signed by OCCAR Director Joachim Sucker and Dario Deste, General Manager of Fincantieri’s Naval Vessels Division, at the Muggiano shipyard. A steel-cutting ceremony was held to mark the commencement of work on the third U212NFS submarine. Vice Admiral Giuseppe Abbamonte, Director of Naval Armaments, was also in attendance.

Simultaneously, an Engineering Change Proposal has been initiated to industrialise, produce, and integrate a new lithium energy storage system (Lithium Battery System) on all U212NFS vessels. This system will replace the existing lead-acid batteries, enhancing the submarines’ underwater range.

The U212NFS submarines are designed to meet the Italian Navy’s requirements for underwater spatial surveillance and control, considering the upcoming retirement of the four “Sauro” class submarines. These new submarines will join the operational U212A class submarines, including the Romei, currently undergoing maintenance at the Muggiano shipyard.

“We are proud to announce this further step forward in Fincantieri’s growth in the defence sector and especially in relation to innovation in the underwater domain. This project contributes to expanding our presence in the underwater sphere, a strategic area where the major challenges of the geopolitical balances and technological innovation of the future will play out,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri.

“In addition to the order for the building of a new next-generation submarine, we signed the agreement for the new Lithium Battery System. This system represents an absolute innovation in underwater propulsion systems and demonstrates the commitment of Fincantieri and the Italian Navy to the development and industrialisation of state-of-the-art international underwater technologies,” he added.

The U212NFS class will support and advance Fincantieri’s strategic and innovative industrial expertise. It will also consolidate the technological lead attained by the company and its supply chain, enhancing the inclusion of advanced components developed by Italian industries.
