First Two of 12 T-6TH Aircraft Arrive in Thailand

Yulian Ardiansyah - : Nov 15, 2022 - : 4:56 pm

The Royal Thai Air Force (RTAF) received its first two of 12 Beechcraft T-6TH Texan II trainer aircraft on Saturday (Nov. 12). The acquisition of these trainer aircraft is part of a contract that amounted to about US$162 million signed in September 2020.

The delivery of the two T-6TH trainer aircraft was done via a ferry flight from Beechcraft’s manufacturing facility at Amarillo, Texas, United States, through fourteen refueling points in Canada, the United Kingdom, Italy, Greece, the Middle East, and India. In total, these aircraft traveled for almost two weeks from their starting point before arriving in Thailand.

These aircraft have been officially inducted into the RTAF Flying Training School at Kamphaeng Saen, Nakhon Pathom Province on Monday (Nov. 14). The RTAF is planning to replace its aging fleet of Pilatus PC-9 trainers with the new aircraft.

The service is also expecting the delivery of the light attack version of the T-6TH called AT-6TH Wolverine in 2024. Eight of these aircraft have been ordered in a separate contract worth about USD143 million signed in November 2021.

Based on the Beechcraft T-6C Texan II, which in turn was developed from the Pilatus PC-9, the T-6TH is a two-seater training aircraft powered by a Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-68 turboprop engine. The aircraft has a maximum speed of 586 km/h, a cruise speed of 510 km/h, a service ceiling of 31,000 ft (9,400 m), and a maximum range of about 1,700 km.

The Beechcraft T-6 variants have been exported to 13 countries. In the South East Asia region, aside from Thailand, Vietnam has also ordered the aircraft for its air force.
