IAI unveils Super Heron

: Feb 12, 2014 - : 9:32 am

Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) used the venue of the Singapore Air Show to internationally launch its Super Heron – Heavy Fuel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). One IAI official told Asian Defence & Diplomacy that the new craft can be described in three words: “faster, stronger, smarter”.

Based on the company’s existing Heron 1, which is also on display at the show in Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) livery (and which is used by 20 other militaries worldwide), the Super Heron is a medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) craft ideal for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance (ISR) and target acquisition missions. IAI’s slogan for the new platform is “the best just got better”!

As its name indicates, an important change for the new craft with 17m wingspan and winglets is its 200hp engine that operates on heavy fuel to significantly reduce the risk of fire. This was one modification sought by users of the original petrol-powered type. The new propulsion system offers increased capacity, rate of climb and performance, with its maximum speed exceeding 150 knots. The Super Heron offers a 1,000km radius using SATCOM links and a 45-hour endurance.

Avionics feature triple redundancy and improved computerised systems. The interface architecture also allows easier integration of new payloads, of which up to 450kg can be carried. The exhibited example includes a MOSP 3000 electro-optical/infrared sensor and ELM-2055 synthetic aperture radar/ground moving target indication payload.
