PT Pindad (Persero) has completed the certification requirements for the grant of the Indonesian Type Certificate for the Harimau Medium Tank. The new Indonesian medium battle tank is being jointly developed by Indonesian state- owned firm PT Pindad and Turkish defence firm FNSS.
“The Tiger Tank Medium Type certificate has been issued based on the existing contract. What has been issued so that it can be used according to its designation,” Head of Indonesia’s Ministry of Defence, Laksma TNI Teguh Sugiono said following the recent grant of the Type Certificate. The Harimau Medium Tank underwent mine blast tests, firing tests, static tests, dynamic tests and other tests, before grant of its combat type certificate.
FNSS has also equipped the Kaplan medium tank (as the Turkish version is known) with Aselsan’s Pulat Active Protection System (APS) to defend against the evolving threats in the battlefield. A Kaplan medium tank fitted with a Pulat APS was displayed for the first time at IDEF 2019.
The use of an APS is the of the utmost necessity during urban combat operations. The Pulat APS was initially developed for the M60T Main Battle Tanks (MBT) of the Turkish Armed Forces by Aselsan and Tubitak Sage. During data collection and system performance tests, PULAT was fired hundreds of times, and completed all of the tests successfully.
The Harimau Medium Tank is to be available for export from 2023. The new medium tank is fitted wall105 mg main gun. The tank weighs 32 tons and has a power to weight ratio of 20 HP / ton. It can attain a maximum speed of 70 km / hour and accommodate a crew of three (commanders, gunner and driver).
