Indonesia’s Nusantara Capital Authority (Otorita Ibu Kota Nusantara / OIKN) and the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation (Kementerian Perhubungan / Kemenhub) are conducting a location survey at two airports in East Kalimantan province. The survey is meant as preparation for the proof of concept for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) planned to be deployed in Indonesia’s new capital.
“The trial of this Urban Air Mobility mode will be carried out before the Republic of Indonesia’s 79th anniversary in 2024,” said Mohammed Ali Berawi, OIKN Deputy for Green and Digital Transformation in Jakarta on Thursday (Feb. 8). “This momentum only exists through IKN development and must be utilized. We hope that there is the technology that can be utilized for creation, development, and increasing the capacity of Indonesia’s human resources.”
He reiterated his endorsement of collaborative projects between East Kalimantan airports and international firms, particularly for conducting a trial of urban air mobility in Nusantara using advanced technology. It has been reported that the Korean Aerospace Research Institute (KARI) and Hyundai Motors Company (HMC) have also taken part in the survey.
In response to this, the OIKN Director of Digital Ecosystem Development, Tonny Agus Setiono said: “Trials must be carried out with thorough assessment and certification and also need to be continued for studies regarding operational feasibility and preparation of recommendations for the scope of new policies in urban air mobility.”
Indonesia’s upcoming capital, Nusantara, is being developed as a “smart city”, incorporating intelligent transportation and mobility technologies centered around Mobility as a Service (MaaS). Urban air mobility is one of the key technologies being integrated into this initiative. The trial will encompass testing booking services for first-mile and last-mile transportation modes using electric cars, along with testing autonomous air mobility modes.
At the present stage, the UAM will connect Balikpapan and Samarinda, two of East Kalimantan province’s largest cities, with Nusantara. The initial construction of the new capital is nearing completion, and it is planned to be inaugurated on the country’s 79th independence anniversary on 17 August this year.
