The Japanese Ministry of Defence, is looking to purchase six Vision 60 Q-UGV mid-sized high-endurance, agile and durable all-weather ground drones from the U.S. firm Ghost Robotics. According to a company official, who spoke with Daily News, funding for the purchase of six Vision 60 Q-UGVs has been secured in Japan’s 2023 Defence Budget. This is Japan’s first purchase of ground drones from Ghost Robotics. The official mentioned that the all-weather ground drones would be used for perimeter security in military areas.
The Ghost Robotics Vision 60 Q-UGV entered service with the U.S. military in 2021 and Japan will receive the same configuration as was sold to the USA, the official said. South Korea is another customer for the ground drones from Ghost Robotics. The Vision 60 Q-UGV has an MTBF of 8,000 hours and many military customers are now working towards installing weapons on the ground drones. The average cost of a Vision 60 Q-UGV is approximately USD 200,000, though costs vary depending on the customisation requested by the customer.
The Vision 60 Q-UGV weighs 51 kg and can achieve a top speed of 3m per second. It can carry a max payload of 10kg and has a max power runtime of 15 minutes. It takes 15 minutes to assemble/disassemble the ground drone, which has an aluminum body and composite legs. According to information posted on Ghost Robotics’ website, it has more than 25 national security customers.
