Latin American Countries Eye BrahMos Missile

: Apr 4, 2018 - : 10:00 pm

Chile and Peru have shown interest in acquiring the BrahMos supersonic cruise missile that India has jointly developed with Russia at a budget of US$300 million.

The Indian government had recently given the go ahead for the export of the missile to friendly countries such as Vietnam and Chile. According to company officials at the ongoing FIDAE, many countries in Latin America have evinced an interest in the missile, due to its inherent capabilities and  as its cost-effectiveness.

“It is a system that is very much in demand,” said an official. “BrahMos’ life cycle cost is very less compared to western competitors and includes the entire life cycle support. The missile is supersonic; it flies at one kilometer per second, much faster than other missiles. When you fly at the highest speed; the enemy will have less time to react.”

Several East Asian countries, including Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines and Malaysia have shown keen interest in the BrahMos missile. It has also caught the attention of Latin American nations such as Argentina, Venezuela, Chile and Brazil, besides South Africa. The missile has been developed at a low budget of US$300 million.

BrahMos expects the missiles to be sold in thousands and towards this end has been multiplying work area. “Our second manufacturing facility is ready and additional facilities are coming up,” says a spokesman.

The missile can be launched from submarines, ships and aircraft. The company is currently developing a mini-version of the super-sonic BrahMos missile, which will be easier to adopt to more platforms.
