Russia’s Rosoboronexport is promoting its Yakovlev Yak-130 two-seat advanced jet trainer/light attack aircraft to Malaysia for its future trainer requirement.
Though there is no formal announcement for any requirement for new trainer aircraft in Malaysia; assessments show that Kuala Lumpur has insufficient assets for training pilots. A Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) official informed during the LIMA 2017 show that a decision to acquire more trainer aircraft would be taken as soon as Malaysia selects a new Multi-Role Combat Aircraft (MRCA), a project which has been delayed for years.
Like Rosoboronexport, several other airframers such as Aero Vodochody with its L-39NG jet trainers, BAE Systems with Hawk, Leonardo with its M-345 and Korea’s KAI with T-50 are eyeing the trainer aircraft deal. However, the Rostec member feels that “Russian equipment faces rather favourable export conditions here particularly in view of its outstanding performance in large-scale anti-terrorist operations.”
“A significant share in the exporter’s profile in South-East Asia belongs to aviation. Company’s specialists believe that the most promising export future faces the Su-family of multirole super-manoeuvrable fighters, namely Su-35 and Su-30MKM, as well as MiG-29M multirole tactical fighter, and Yak-130 combat-trainer, says Deputy Director General Sergey Goreslavsky of Rosoboronexport.
With Malaysia and other countries in South-East Asia intensifying their modernization and rearmament plans of their respective militaries, Rosoboronexport realizes the importance of demonstrating at DSA 2018 its capacity to supply the best military products for all arms and services, as well as readiness for mutually beneficial cooperation in any form In the army sector, Rosoboronexport places its stakes on the T-90S and T-90MS tanks, Metis-M1 and Kornet-EM ATGMs, and Kalashnikov’s 100-series rifles.
