European missile specialist MBDA made a strong case for its 5th generation MMP anti-tank guided missile (ATGM) at the recently concluded DIMDEX exhibition held in Doha, Qatar.
Qatar has been seeking to procure ATGMs for several land systems and MBDA displayed a turret mounted solution with four MMP missiles and a cannon at the show.
The MMP is also being proposed for fitment on Qatar’s Nexter VBCI armoured vehicles.
Speaking to Daily News at the show, company officials said “MMP has been designed from the outset to engage targets in any weather condition at a range of 4km. The ability to operate in all weather and any environmental condition is a major advantage for us.”
MBDA already has an export customer for the MMP and a second customer is also in the pipeline according to company officials.
Deliveries of the first batch of 50 MMP missiles and 20 firing storiess to the French Armed Forces started in November last year and the French Army units are expected to make their first operational deployment with the MMP next summer. This will be the first deployment of a 5th generation ATGM, anywhere in the world.
The MMP has also been proposed for Australia’s Land 400 programme, where it is competing with Rafael’s Spike ATGM and a decision is expected next week.
The MMP is fitted with two warheads and these can be selectively employed by the operator if needed. The first warhead at the head of the missile is used to penetrate Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA), while the second warhead which is also larger, can penetrate 1m of Rolled Homogeneous Armor (RHA) or 3m of concrete.
The option to use either warhead significantly enhances the usefulness of the MMP and reduces the logistics burden of carrying two different missiles with different warheads.
The MMP will gradually replace the Milan and HOT missiles mounted on VAB Armoured Fighting Vehicles (ERYX in some cases) and will be delivered to infantry and cavalry units of the French Army in addition to the special forces units of all three services.
France will acquire a total of 400 firing storiess and 1,750 missiles by 2025.
