Naval Group has wrapped up the modernization of the third and final French Navy’s La Fayette frigate, the Aconit, following six months of work and a series of dockside and sea trials. This marks the completion of a significant modernization program for all three ships, equipping them with new anti-submarine warfare capabilities and extending their operational lifespan by five years.
The contract to modernize the La Fayette frigates was awarded to the Naval Group by the French General Armament Directorate (DGA) in 2017, covering the frigates Courbet, La Fayette, and Aconit. The modernization efforts addressed obsolescence issues, updated various systems, and introduced new capabilities.
Key modernizations included the replacement of the combat system (CMS) with the SENIT system developed by Naval Group, enhancing optronic surveillance capabilities, strengthening structural integrity and stability, and upgrading the anti-air defense system to two Sadral systems armed with Mistral very short-range ground-to-air missiles. Additionally, the installation of a hull sonar has equipped all three frigates with anti-submarine warfare capabilities.
During the sea trials phase, the Aconit demonstrated maneuverability despite increased displacement and the addition of the sonar dome. Acoustic discretion levels were maintained, maximum speed targets were met, and integration of the sonar and new combat steering system improved overall performance.
