French shipbuilder Naval Group has handed over the Gowind corvette Al Emarat to the United Arab Emirates on Thursday (Jun. 27). The ceremony in Lorient was attended by a delegation from the UAE Navy, led by Deputy Commander Brigadier Abdulla Al Mehairbi.

The UAE ordered the second Gowind corvette from Naval Group in 2019. Built in Lorient, the corvette was launched in May 2022 and began sea trials in October 2023, at the same time the first corvette, Bani Yas, was delivered.

The crew of Al Emarat will continue their operational training in France. The ship will depart for the UAE under the Emirati flag in July, with arrival in Abu Dhabi expected in August.

“I am very honoured to be with you on this symbolic day for Naval Group as we deliver the second Gowind Al Emarat to the UAE Navy,” said Olivier de la Bourdonnaye, Naval Group Executive Vice-President, Surface Ships.

“Naval Group has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to the success of the Bani Yas programme, in close cooperation with the UAE Navy, and we are proud today to welcome our Emirati guests for the flag transfer ceremony of the Al Emarat corvette.”

The Gowind corvettes for the UAE were constructed at Naval Group’s Lorient shipyard, featuring equipment produced locally by UAE industry. The Naval Group is strengthening its relationship with the UAE Navy to address future challenges. Additionally, the Group is expanding its partnership with local industry to support the maintenance of these corvettes in the UAE.

This programme illustrates Naval Group’s commitment to delivering advanced systems to the UAE Navy and establishing a long-term presence in the country through industrial cooperation with local partners.

The Gowind corvette has achieved notable success, with 11 units selected by various navies. It offers versatile capabilities and is designed for a range of naval defence and maritime security operations.
