Philippine Navy Frigate BRP Antonio Luna Makes IMDEX Debut

A much-anticipated aspect to IMDEX 2023 in Singapore is the warship display, with 22 naval and coast guard vessels berthing at Changi Naval Base for the duration of this year’s exhibition. One warship making its debut at the show was the Philippine Navy (PN) frigate BRP Antonio Luna (FF-151).

Daily News spoke to the future commanding officer of this 2,600-tonne South Korean-built frigate, Captain Clyde Domingo, who will take command of the vessel on 30 May.

This was the second PN frigate built by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI), and it was commissioned on 19 March 2021. It is normally based at Subic Bay, but it was making its first voyage south to Singapore.

Domingo said the frigate would live fire its Mistral Simbad-RC surface-to-air missiles for the first time around a week later.

BRP Antonio Luna also attended RIMPAC 2022 in Hawaii, where it achieved third place out of 19 vessels in a gunnery contest with its OTO Melara 76mm Super Rapid naval gun.

Embarked aboard the frigate was an AW109 Power helicopter, but it is capable of carrying the AW159 Wildcat too. However, the latter has not yet completed its qualifications on this frigate class yet.

The frigate has not yet received its full complement of weapons yet, with a close-in weapon system (CIWS) and eight cells of vertical-launched surface-to-air missiles not yet installed. The CIWS is unlikely to be the American Phalanx due to cost.
