Philippines Eyes Japan-made Type-81 SAM Systems

Our Bureau - : Jul 15, 2024 - : 11:57 pm

Following the recent signing of the Reciprocal Access Agreement (RAA) between the Philippines and Japan, reports suggest that the Philippines is interested in acquiring Japan-made Type-81 surface-to-air missile (SAM) systems.

Japan is planning to retire several SAM systems and replace them with more advanced models. The Type-81 SAM, one of the systems set to be decommissioned, appears to have caught the attention of the Philippines. It remains unclear whether the Philippines intends to purchase these systems or if they will be provided as part of a defence aid package from Japan.

The Type-81 SAM was first deployed by the Japan Self-Defence Force (JSDF) in 1981 and has undergone continuous upgrades since. The system features a launcher for two missiles and a Fire Control System (FCS), each mounted on a 6×6 Type 73 armoured mobile truck manufactured by Isuzu.

Each missile measures 2.7 metres in length, 160 mm in diameter, has a wingspan of 600 mm, and weighs around 100 kg. Equipped with a 9.2 kg high-explosive fragmentation warhead, the missile can reach speeds of up to Mach 2.9, with a maximum range of 14 km and a flight ceiling of 3,000 metres.

In addition to the Type-81, Japan also plans to phase out the MIM-23 Improved HAWK SAM systems, a Japanese variant of the US-made missile, which was upgraded in 2003.
