PT. Batamec Shipyard launched KRI Balongan (908), the third Tarakan-class replenishment tanker for the Indonesian Navy (Tentara Nasional Indonesia Angkatan Laut/TNI-AL) at Batam, on Sunday (Sep. 4).

Known in TNI-AL as Bantu Cair Minyak (BCM) ship, KRI Balongan (908) is the second Tarakan-class tanker the company is building for TNI-AL after KRI Bontang (907) that was launched in 2018. The lead ship of the class, KRI Tarakan (905), built by PT Dok & Perkapalan Kodja Bahari and was launched in 2014.

Each Tarakan-class replenishment tanker is equipped with a helipad but has no hangar. They have a dimension of 122.4 meters in length, 9 meters beam, and a displacement of about 2,400 tonnes. Powered by two 6,114 PS engines, they can reach a maximum speed of 18 knots and have a maximum range of about 7.680 nautical miles (14.224 km) with a maximum payload capacity of 5,500 tonnes of fuel.

Each ship in this class is also armed with two 20-mm manually-operated automatic cannons and two 12.7 mm heavy machine guns for self-defense purposes.

Under the Indonesian military modernization program, the Indonesian Navy is hoping to have six new replenishment tankers by 2024 to replace several old vessels in the Indonesian Navy’s inventory that have been put in service since the 1960s. The largest of which, KRI Arun (903) with a displacement of 11,520 tonnes, was built in 1968 and served in the Royal Navy as RFA Green Rover (A268) before being sold to Indonesia in 1992 following its retirement.

PT. Batamec Shipyard is an Indonesian privately-owned company located in Batam island, Riau Islands province.
