S-A2 Furthers Supernal’s eVTOL Vision Concept

Supernal LLC’s S-A2 electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vehicle product concept, which was unveiled earlier this year in January, marks the latest milestone in the eVTOL pioneer’s roadmap to commercialize safe, efficient, and affordable everyday passenger air travel. The pilot-plus-four-passenger S-A2 builds on the company’s S-A1 vision concept which debuted at CES 2020. Supernal LLC is Hyundai Motor Group’s Advanced Air Mobility (AAM) company and is preparing to enter the eVTOL market in 2028.

The S-A2 features a V-tail aircraft design, which can cruise at 120 miles per hour and meet typical city operation needs of 25- to 40-mile trips. It will operate at an altitude of 1,500 feet. The S-A2 features a distributed electric propulsion architecture and has eight all-tilting rotors. Hyundai Motor Group’s designers have also incorporated the latest in passenger experience and automotive design best practices into the S-A2.

The S-A2 concept will eventually transition into a commercial product, at entry into service, Supernal’s vehicle will operate as quietly as a dishwasher: 65 dB in vertical take-off and landing phases and 45 dB while cruising horizontally.

The vehicle is designed with a priority on safety with a robust airframe structure including redundant components in critical systems such as powertrain, flight controls, and avionics. Aviation-grade, energy-absorbing components are integrated into the seat frames. The all-tilting rotor configuration will power the vehicle through both the vertical lift and horizontal cruise phases of flight with unique efficiency.
