Saab has begun its marketing campaign to promote the JAS-39 Gripen in Indonesia, as a replacement for the obsolete F-5E. The Swedish company is positioned to offer 44 aircraft that would match the F-16 performance, but at considerably lower operating cost. The Gripen is already operational in Thailand, and the TNI-AU, the Indonesian Air Force, is positioned to require considerably more aircraft (44). Saab is also offering the Gripen in Malaysia.
According to Saab, since Indonesia requires the coverage of an extremely large area, spanning an archipelago of 17,000 islands stretching over nearly 2 million square kilometres, arge geographical spread requires the Air Force to operate aircraft at high availability, with long time on station, short turn-arounds, long ferry range and large combat radius.
Therefore, it would be looking at an aircraft that is affordable, superior and have low operational cost – According to Saab, all these make the Gripen C an ideal solution for Indonesia. The Swedish company also offering industrial cooperation to support the deal.
