UK MoD Acquires Six Airbus H145 Helicopters for Fleet Upgrade

Our Bureau - : Apr 19, 2024 - : 5:55 pm

The UK Ministry of Defence (MoD) ordered six Airbus H145 helicopters as part of its efforts to update its rotary fleet and streamline operations. These helicopters will primarily serve in Cyprus for emergency response missions and in Brunei to support UK military training in jungle warfare, replacing the existing Airbus Pumas in these roles.

“We congratulate the MoD on this smart acquisition which simultaneously provides the right-sized helicopter for the Cyprus and Brunei requirements, represents excellent value for the UK taxpayer, and is another key step in the rationalisation of types in the transport helicopter fleet,” said Lenny Brown, Airbus Helicopters UK Managing Director on Friday (Apr. 19).

“The H145 Jupiter, and its sister H135 Juno, continue to demonstrate exceptional reliability and versatility in the training role in the Military Flying Training System (MFTS) and will bring these crucial attributes to their new tasks,” he added.

These helicopters are scheduled for delivery next year and will complement the existing fleet at the Defence Helicopter Flying School, located at RAF Shawbury. This consolidation aims to reduce support costs and pilot conversion training time significantly.

The latest version of the Airbus H145 features a five-bladed rotor and an increase of useful load by 150 kg. The new bearingless main rotor design simplifies maintenance and enhances serviceability and reliability, improving the overall flight experience for passengers and crew.

Powered by two Safran Arriel 2E engines, the H145 helicopter features advanced digital avionics and autopilot systems to enhance safety and reduce pilot workload. Airbus Helicopters also touted the rotorcraft’s low acoustic footprint and minimal CO2 emissions further underscoring its environmental credentials.

Currently, there are over 1,675 H145 family helicopters in operation worldwide, accumulating more than 7.6 million flight hours.
