U.S. Navy Extends Trident II Missile Development Contract

Our Bureau - : Feb 4, 2025 - : 2:19 am

The U.S. Navy has awarded Lockheed Martin a $383 million contract modification to continue the development of the next generation of the Trident II Strategic Weapons System (SWS) D5 missile. The contract follows a cost-plus-incentive-fee and cost-plus-fixed-fee structure.

Under this modification, the company will design an upgraded version of the missile, known as the Trident II D5 Life Extension 2 (D5LE2). The modernised missile is intended for deployment on COLUMBIA-class ballistic missile submarines, ensuring the system remains viable through 2084.

"The second life extension of the Trident D5 missile will enable the United States and United Kingdom, through the Polaris Sales Agreement, to maintain credibility deterring evolving threats," said Jerry Mamrol, vice president of Fleet Ballistic Missiles at Lockheed Martin. "We are proud to continue our critical partnership with the U.S. Navy to take deterrence into this new era."

The Trident II D5 missile, developed and upgraded by Lockheed Martin, is currently in service on U.S. OHIO-class and U.K. VANGUARD-class submarines. This year marks 70 years of Lockheed Martin's support for the U.S. Navy's Fleet Ballistic Missiles (FBM) programme, which has played a key role in maintaining the nation's sea-based deterrence.

Lockheed Martin's FBM programme continues to support U.S. and allied security, with a focus on technological advancements, modern infrastructure, and long-term sustainability.
